Prevent Clogs in Your Septic Tank & Avoid Costly Repairs

Does Septic Tank Filter Cleaning Matter?

Yes! Regular septic tank filter cleaning is a vital aspect of septic system maintenance that helps you avoid severe problems and saves you money on major problems. Here’s how routine septic tank filter cleaning saves you time, money, and stress:

  • Preventing Clogs: Your filter can become clogged with solids over time, reducing the flow of wastewater, leading to backups and system malfunctions.
  • Maintaining System Efficiency: A clean septic filter allows for the efficient passage of liquid, preventing unnecessary strain on your system.
  • Avoiding Costly Repairs: Neglecting septic filter maintenance can result in costly repairs and replacements.
  • Protecting Your Drain Field: By preventing excess solids from entering the drain field, you reduce the risk of drain field failure.

Signs Your Septic Filter Needs Cleaning

If you notice any of these signs, your septic filter might be overdue for a cleaning:

  • Slow Drains: If sinks or toilets drain slowly, it may indicate a clogged septic filter.
  • Gurgling Sounds: Unusual sounds during drainage could signal a blockage, possibly due to a clogged filter.
  • Odors: Foul smells from drains or the septic tank area may suggest a filter buildup requiring cleaning.
  • Backups in Fixtures: Plumbing backups in toilets or sinks may indicate a clogged filter affecting the system.
  • Lush Grass or Standing Water: An unusually lush lawn over the drain field or standing water can be signs of a filter issue.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD SEPTIC FILTERS BE CLEANED?

As a general guideline, septic filters should typically be cleaned every 6 to 12 months.

However, the frequency of how often you should clean your septic tank filter depends on several factors, including:

  • Household Size: Larger households generate more wastewater, which puts more strain on the filter. The more people who rely on your septic system, the more often the filter should be cleaned.
  • Water Usage: Taking longer showers and doing laundry frequently means increased wastewater flow, which necessitates more frequent filter cleaning.
  • Tank Size: Smaller tanks fill up more quickly, leading to more frequent filter cleaning. Larger tanks may require less frequent maintenance.
  • Septic System Design: Does your system have additional filters or treatment components? Some systems may have secondary filters that need attention at different intervals.
  • Use of Garbage Disposal: If you use a garbage disposal in your kitchen, it introduces additional solid waste into the septic system, necessitating more frequent septic tank filter cleaning to prevent clogs.

Septic Tank Filter Cleaning FAQs

Got questions about septic tank filter cleaning? Check out our FAQs below. If you don’t find what you’re looking for here, be sure to call or email us!

Where is the filter actually located?

It sits inside the tank at the outlet pipe — the side where liquid exits toward your drain field.

Most King County systems installed after the mid-90s have them. If you’re unsure, we can identify your system type in minutes.

No. We only need access to the tank’s manhole or riser lid. Your landscaping stays intact.

We pull the cartridge, pressure-rinse the debris back into the tank to contain the mess, and re-install it.

No! Do not attempt opening the tank yourself unless you’ve done it before and know how to do it safely. Septic tanks trap toxic gases like hydrogen sulfide and methane. One deep breath can be fatal; leave the lid-pulling to the pros.

We don’t recommend this. If you don’t do it correctly, you can drop solids into the outlet pipe, which leads to an immediate (and expensive) drain field clog.

Usually under an hour. It’s a quick maintenance stop that prevents a week-long repair headache.

Raw solids will flow directly into your drain field. This will eventually “seal” your soil and require a full system replacement costing thousands.
